Milestone of Working Area B
Since May 17, 2021, PGE has officially become the operator of the oil and gas field in Working Area B in North Aceh. PGE took over the management of Working Area B from Pertamina Hulu Energi NSB. PHE NSB had been managing Working Area B since October 2015 after taking over from the previous operator, ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Inc (formerly Mobil Oil Indonesia Inc.).
Mobil Oil Indonesia Inc. began operations in the Arun gas field in North Aceh in 1968 after signing an exploration agreement with the Indonesian government. ExxonMobil manages three Contracts of Cooperation (PSC) namely Block B (Arun and South Lhoksukon), Block NSO and Block Pase. Gas production from these fields is channeled to PT Perta Arun Gas facilities for further processing.
During its peak production period, the Arun field produced 3.4 billion cubic feet of gas per day in 1994 and condensate production reached 130 thousand barrels per day in 1989. The first export of LNG from the Arun field began in 1978. In addition, gas produced at the Arun field is also supplied to fertilizer companies and local paper companies.
Up to 2015 the Arun field has supplied more than 4,000 cargoes of LNG to Pertamina for sale to buyers in Korea and Japan. PHE NSB and PHE NSO currently produce 140 million cubic feet of raw gas per day. In addition to gas, the two blocks also produce an average of 1,750 barrels of condensate per day.
Important Activities in Working Area B
- 1898 Standard Oil Company New York (Socony) opened a marketing office in Java Island
- 1968 Mobil established a subsidiary in Indonesia under the name Mobil Oil Indonesia Inc. (MOII) and later became the operator of Block B in Aceh Province.
- 1971 Mobil Oil Indonesia discovered the Arun Gas Field in Block B in Lhoksukon – North Aceh.
- 1972 South Lhoksukon (SLS) Gas Field is discovered.
- 1973 First LNG sale and purchase contract signed.
- 1978 First shipment of LNG to Japan.
- 1983 The first gas sales and purchase contract with PT Pupuk Iskandar Muda was signed.
- 1996 First production of South Lhoksukon A Gas Field.
- 1997 First production of South Lhoksukon D Gas Field.
- 2014 Last shipment of LNG as the gas feedstock was no longer economical to process into LNG.
- 2015 Transfer of Operator of Working Area B from ExxonMobil to Pertamina managed through PT PHE NSB.
- May 17, 2021 Transfer of Operator of Working Area B from PHE NSB to PT PEMA Blobal Energi (PGE) with a work contract for the next 20 years.
